About New Delhi Indira Gandhi International Airport
The New Delhi Indira Gandhi International Airport is located in Delhi, India, and is the largest airport in India as measured by daily flight traffic. The airport has a current capacity of 46 million passengers, and handles both both domestic and international flights.
The airport was originally constructed during the Second World War as an air base for the Indian Air Force, and began accepting civilian passenger traffic in 1962. The airport currently operates three terminals; Terminal 3, the newest terminal, was completed in 2010 and is the world's eighth largest passenger terminal. The airport has plans to build two more terminals with the intention of increasing annual passenger capacity to 100 million passengers by 2030. The airport also has a Hajj Terminal that is open from October through December to accomodate Muslim passengers traveling during the annual Hajj. The terminal has the capacity to handle 10 million passengers, and is dormant during the rest of the year.
The airport hosts international flights from many of the world's major airlines, including Aeroflot, Continental, KLM, and Virgin Atlantic Airways. Domestic Indian airlines that operate out of the airport include Air India, Kingfisher, and SpiceJet. The airport is located in South Delhi, and the airport is connected to the city center by the Delhi Gurgaon Expressway and the Delhi Airport Metro Express.
